Happy New Year - E Ala E

Okay, with the new year I'm going to try to start posting here at least somewhat regularly.

I enjoyed the holidays particularly because my dad and step-mom (Paul and Liz) came to visit for a couple weeks, catching both my 40th birthday and Christmas. As those of us who live here in Hawaii so often find, hosting visitors gives us the reason to go out and experience the island and the activities that we too often miss otherwise, in the busy-ness of our daily lives. Kekula and I really enjoyed just spending time with them, but I especially enjoyed sharing our life and the islands with them, and we did a lot of great activities. Over the next week or so I'll highlight some of the activities, including a goat farm, whale watch, helicopter ride, botanical garden, wind farm, Lahaina historical walking tour, and Ulalena.

But first, for the dawn of a new year, how about a Haleakala Sunrise photo? This was taken Dec. 19 at 7:07 a.m. The actual sunrise is of course to the left, but this is looking toward the Big Island, with Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa visible. You can't see it in this photo, but Mauna Kea, the white mountain, was indeed capped with snow. When I was in high school at Seabury, we used to go camping in the crater on a regular basis and I saw many sunrises, but for years now I only seem to get up to Haleakala when I'm hosting visitors, last time my Aunt Barbara. But every time I find it awesome and inspiring. Watching the sun rise from the house of the sun, I more sense the motion of the earth turning into the sun than the sun rising.

Breathe deeply. E Ala E.

My new personal blog

I have maintained the Hawaiian Independence blog for over four years now, but I've really tried to keep my posts there focused on a limited set of topics relating to Hawaii's independence, Native Hawaiians issues and programs, etc. I've avoided posting too much personal info there (except for our cats). But I've got a lot of other interests! I've been thinking about starting another personal blog for a while, and I'm finally doing it. I will post on whatever I happen to be interested in, including politics (other than Hawaiian), music, movies, TV, sports (mainly football), family, and whatever I'm up to. And the cat pix will move here now, as well. (I'm also planning to start a blog for the Kipahulu Ohana, so I'll be posting updates about the various projects I'm working on there, once it get it set up.) I have no idea how often I'll post, but I figure, got to start with one...
